Imagine being so shaken by a personal mission that you sacrifice your home, your car … everything … to create your own change in the world. That’s how Lidia Schaefer, a manicurist in Washington, D.C. was able to build an 8-building school system for her home village of Feres Mai, Ethiopia.

It took her 10 years, but through her customers’ tips, donated books and supplies, and the sale of her belongings Lidia has forever changed Feres Mai.  Lidia created jobs by constructing the school, and now its existence has fostered an educational community in the village.

Lidia was spurred to act in 1994, when her relative, (Medhine, 9, above)  was killed during the kids’ long evening walk home from the old school, which was taught

under a shade tree three hours away.

In all she saved $258,000. The school was dedicated in 2007 and named “Lidia Secondary School.”
